چکیده

When an observer is faced with an ambiguous, occluded or degraded image, the image will frequently be perceptually completed. In perceptual completion observers report seeing the presence of features or objects which are actually absent that are the complement or “completion” of features or objects in the image. We report a novel completion effect resulting from adding half of a bilaterally symmetric image to visual noise, which results in an illusory appearance of the missing half-image in the noise. In this paper we investigate the role of prior knowledge and symmetry in this perceptual completion stimulus using a signal detection task. The task allows us to obtain separate measures of the magnitude of the completion effect (via false alarm rate) and the processing involved in the completion effect (via sensitivity, d’). With these separate measures, we can begin to distinguish between low-level and high-level theories of perceptual completion. We contrast low-level theories that produce differences in sensitivity between completion and no completion conditions with high-level theories that predict no change in detection sensitivity. Our results are most consistent with completion in our stimuli occuring as a result of a high-level perceptual inference or judgement rather than low-level, bottom-up processing. In addition, we show that additional symmetry information can augment the completion effect without changing sensitivity.

Knowing Each Random Error of Our Ways, but Hardly Correcting for It: An Instance of Optimal Performance

Random errors are omnipresent in sensorimotor tasks due to perceptual and motor noise. The question is, are humans aware of their random errors on an instance-by-instance basis? The appealing answer would be 'no' because it seems intuitive that humans would otherwise immediately correct for the errors online, thereby increasing sensorimotor precision. However, here we show the opposite. Partici...

Anisotropy of tolerance of perceptual completion at the blind spot

Three experiments examined anisotropies of tolerance of perceptual completion at the blind spot when a pair of line segments was presented on opposite sides of the blind spot. The tolerance of perceptual completion is defined as the maximum difference in a stimulus attribute between the line segments on opposite sides of the blind spot when perceptual completion of a line has occurred. The misa...

Finding out about filling-in: a guide to perceptual completion for visual science and the philosophy of perception.

In visual science the term filling-in is used in different ways, which often leads to confusion. This target article presents a taxonomy of perceptual completion phenomena to organize and clarify theoretical and empirical discussion. Examples of boundary completion (illusory contours) and featural completion (color, brightness, motion, texture, and depth) are examined, and single-cell studies r...

Evidence for a dissociation between perceptual and conceptual priming in Alzheimer's disease.

The status of perceptual priming and word-completion priming in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) was examined. Experiment 1 established the reliability of the perceptual priming measure in normal subjects. In Experiment 2, AD patients showed a normal magnitude of perceptual priming. In Experiment 3, a single group of AD patients showed a normal magnitude of perceptual priming and impaired...

Filling-in of retinal scotomas

In this study we examined the perception of one- and two-dimensional patterns across central retinal scotomas, caused by age-related macular degeneration. In contrast with previous studies of disrupted visual input that used the blind spot and artificial scotomas, the current study used large central scotomas caused by physical retinal damage. Such damage is associated with atrophy and long-ter...
